The body has the highest concentration of SAM-e when you are young. These levels decline as you age. SAM-e is able to cross the blood-brain barrier where it affects the synthesis & activation of various brain chemicals, such as neurotransmitters.

S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM-e) acts as a methyl donor, with dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin elevating properties as well as powerful antidepressant effects.

SAM-e also supports joint comfort, function & mobility in the spine, hips & knees. It has a critical role in cartilage formation. (SAM-e) also acts as a methyl donor for all known biological methylation reactions & participates in the synthesis of glutathione, the main cellular anti-oxidant.

Doctors in Europe prescribe SAM-e for the therapy of several conditions, including depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, and fibromyalgia.

S-Adenosyl Methionine (SAM-e 200) is the amino acid methionine bound to an ATP molecule; this molecule circulates in the blood naturally & acts as a ‘methyl donor’. A methyl group in chemistry is simply a carbon molecule (bound to some hydrogens) & donating a methyl group to other molecules can accelerate or preserve reactions in the body as a form of metabolic ‘maintenance’.

Lower circulating levels of SAM-e have been associated with osteoarthritis & depression, in both conditions, SAM-e appears to hold potent therapeutic potential.

SAM-e supports joint comfort, function & mobility in the spine, hips & knees. It has a critical role in cartilage formation. In addition to which, SAM-e also acts as a methyl donor for all known biological methylation reactions & participates in the synthesis of glutathione, the main cellular anti-oxidant.

Doctors in Europe prescribe SAM-e for the therapy of several conditions, including depression, chronic fatigue syndrome, & fibromyalgia.

After a build-up period of 1-2 months supplemental SAM-e (at 800-1600mg daily) appears to be as potent as some pharmaceutical options for both osteoarthritides as well as depression & appears to enhance some anti-depressants.

Although lower circulating levels of SAM-e are also seen in diabetes, the benefits of SAM-e & glucose control are not as well established as depression & osteoarthritis.

For SAM-e to benefit osteoarthritis, it appears to require a few weeks or up to a month of continuous usage for benefits to show.

Benefits to depressive symptoms may be much more rapid.

SAM-e holds promise as a treatment for multiple neuropsychiatric conditions. The encouraging findings support further study of SAM-e in both psychiatric and comorbid medical illnesses.

Research Studies

SAMe decreases symptoms of osteoarthritis.  1200mg SAMe after 30 days was associated with significant improvements in pain and functionality in adults with osteoarthritis. Efficacy was similar to 750mg Naproxen in regards to pain reduction and symptoms reduction over 30 days. There was efficacy in persons with hip osteoarthritis

SAMe appears to be of similar potency to tricyclic antidepressants. Despite the increasingly large array of antidepressants available to treat the major depressive disorder, patients continue to experience relatively modest response and remission rates. In addition, patients may experience adverse side effects from pharmacotherapy that not only hinder treatment compliance and adherence but, in some cases, may also contribute to increased disability, patient suffering, morbidity, and mortality.  In order to enhance treatment efficacy and tolerability, patients and clinicians have become increasingly interested in nonpharmaceutical supplements for treating depression. One of the best-studied of these supplements is S-adenosyl-L-methionine (SAM-e).
